Funds are to be paid out to local governments due to federal land not being taxed.
The Interior Department announced on Monday that the latest round of Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funds. These payments are paid by the Interior Department to local governments to aid in revenue due to the fact that the federal government is exempt from paying taxes to municipalities. Over $514 million was paid to over 1900 municipalities.
Secretary Bernhardt praised the popular program saying that the money “will help small towns pay for critical needs like emergency response, public safety, public schools, housing, social services, and infrastructure.” Funds are distributed based on the total acreage of land within each jurisdiction and the population of the area.
